| HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | The Chown Hardware Co. Ltd. was established in 1906 by W. W. Chown who moved in that year with his family to Edmonton from Belleville, Ontario. Chown was assisted in his enterprise by four sons, W. A., R.C., M. M., and L.J. Chown. The business went into liquidation in May of 1916 and it appears that the Chown family left Edmonton, shortly thereafter. |

| SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds consists of financial records and correspondence with manufacturers, distributers of hardware, business associated and clients from the last year and a half of Chown Hardware's operation. It also includes documents, legal papers and financial records generated by the liquidation of the business. ; The material presents a fairly complete record of the final 15 months of the business operation. |
