HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | The community of the Sisters of the Assumption is divided into various ecclesiastical provinces. Around 1900 the Sisters opened a provincial administration office in Edmonton to manage the ecclesiastical Province of St. John the Evangelist covering Alberta and Saskatchewan. This office was directed by a Sister having the title of Provincial and by a group of Sisters forming the Provincial Council. This administration office managed finances, human resources and policies related to the convents and schools found in the Province of St. John the Evangelist. This administrative centre closed in 1998 when the ecclesiastical Province of St. John the Evangelist disappeared during a reorganization of the ecclesiastical provinces. Alberta and Saskatchewan are now directly under the administration of the community mother-house or head office in Nicolet, Province of Québec. |
SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The series includes the provincial administration office records from the Edmonton provincial office of the Sisters of the Assumption. It consists of correspondence (1923-1963), lists of clubs managed by the Sisters (1926-1960), biographies of Sisters (1901-1978), unpublished historical files on communities and convents (1853-1983), theses and academic reports written by the Sisters (1960-1990), bulletins published by the administration office (1934-1968), publications used by the Sisters as teaching materials (1875-1985). |
