HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Father Adéodat Thérien wished to develop, in the Saint-Paul area, a French and Catholic centre. In order to implement his plans, he recruited colonizers who started to arrive in 1907 and settled around the reserve. The area was served by the Sisters of the Assumption. The school population increased quickly with the arrival of these settlers. In 1909 the Sisters started to accept a few young girls as boarders in their convent. In 1918 the day-school had more than 150 students and the Sisters of the Assumption convent had 50 boarders. In 1930 the school population was such that it was necessary to build another school to hold more than 500 students. Saint-Paul became the seat of a new diocese in 1948. In 1955 the local School Board decided to hire a lay-principal for the school which was attended by 775 students, and the Sisters started to teach under a lay-director. The same year the Sisters opened a noviciate in Saint-Paul. In 1957 the nuns had eight novices but the noviciate closed in 1963. In the last part of the last century the Sisters continued to be active in the parish, diocese and school.
