HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Slocan City was established in 1901 because of the mines of the region. A Catholic church was opened there in 1920. In 1942 the Canadian Government forced the evacuation of more than 20 000 Japanese Canadians established on the Pacific Coast. More than 1 800 of them were deported into the Slocan Valley and packed into the broken down houses of Slocan City and other localities of the area. The Catholic Church asked the Sisters of the Assumption to help in these Slocan City internment camps. The Sisters arrived in 1943 to teach the Japanese Canadians. Teaching conditions were difficult because the mission school could not count on any help from the Provincial Government. The Sisters left Slocan City in 1946 when the confinement was over. |
SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The series includes the Japanese internment camps records. It consists of financial records (1945-1956), correspondence and administrative papers (1943-1945). |
