HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Alan D. Ridge was born in Brighton, England in 1926. He attended University College, London and received a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in History in 1947. In 1948, he received a diploma in Archives Administration from the same institute. The following year the Members Library of the London County Council hired Ridge as a Historical Research Assistant. In the early 1950's Ridge became an assistant Archivist in the Greater London Record Office. In 1958, he was appointed the Head of the Records and Registry Service of the National Coal Board. In 1962, Ridge came to Montreal to establish and administer the archival program at McGill University. In this capacity he also taught records management courses through the Faculty of Extension as well as giving seminars on archives administration in the Faculty of Library Science. In 1968, Alan Ridge succeeded Hugh Taylor as Provincial Archivist of Alberta. During his tenure as Provincial Archivist, Ridge acquired over 4,000 accessions totaling over 5 linear miles, initiated the records management program in the provincial government, and served throughout his term as the Secretary of the provincial Public Records Committee. He retired as Provincial Archivist in 1984. Alan Ridge held membership with the Association of Canadian Archivists (ACA), the Alberta Society of Archivists (ASA), the Historical Society of Alberta (HSA), the Association of Records Managers and Administrators (ARMA) as well as other archival organizations. He also taught archival courses at the University of Alberta. In 1983, he became a Member of the Institute of Certified Records Managers' Board of Regents. He then was appointed a Fellow the Society of American Archivists. In 1985, he became inducted into the Order of Canada. Alan Ridge passed away in 1997.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:All of the material in these accessions were donated directly from Mr Alan D. Ridge, either in his capacity as the Provincial Archivist or as a private person, or from his wife, Gereldine Ridge.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of records created by Mr. Ridge in pursuance of his role as the Provincial Archivist of Alberta, documenting what he thought to be important or mandatory transfers of records to the Archives. Also included in the fonds are the personal papers of Mr. Ridge that, for the majority, were created as a result of his active involvement in the national and international archival community. The fonds consists of two series: Personal papers, and Records of the Provincial Archivist.
GENERAL NOTE: Given the time period and the lesser degree of importance placed upon the regulation of records management in the Government of Alberta these records were directly transfered to the Archives under no particular transmittal or regulation from Mr. Ridge's office. These records were treated as non-government records at the time and have remained so in this new description.
