ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Harry Pollard, son of photographer James Pollard, was born in Tillsonburg, Ontario in 1880. He moved west in May 1899 and set up a photographic studio in Calgary, Alberta. Pollard became a well-established photographer in the community. His famous collection includes photographs of the Klondike gold rush of 1888 and 1889, and hundreds of pictures of Indigenous people. In 1924 the Associated Screen News, a subsidiary of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), hired Pollard to photograph their global ocean cruises for promotional purposes. It was this job that took him around the world 14 times. Also during this time, Pollard honed his skills as a cinematographer, and much of his footage was used in newsreels issued by Associated Screen News. In 1954, after 30 years with Associated Screen News, Pollard retired. Harry Pollard was very active in the Calgary community. He was an organizer and charter member of the Calgary Golf and Country Club, a member of the Alpine Club and a member of the Canadian Trail Riders Club. Harry and his wife Eleanor (Ella), a former Miss Canada from 1908, were both members of St. Barnabas Anglican Church. Together, Harry and Ella had five children: Harry, William, Laura, Martha and Helen. In 1919, Harry and Ella's daughter Laura died. Then in 1953 they lost their son Harry and their daughter Martha. Ella then died in 1964. Four years later, on July 9th, 1968 at the age of 87, Harry Pollard died.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:The records of the Harry Pollard fonds were deposited at the Provincial Archives of Alberta over the course of several years. The earliest accession from 1964 was purchased from Harry Pollard by the archives. Records deposited in 1966 came from the Historic Sites Officer for the Provincial Museum and Archives of Alberta. Harry Pollard's son William deposited more records in 1969. In 1988, Bill Pollard deposited more records with the archives. The accession from 1991 was deposited at the archives by a woman from Ontario. Al Brekke deposited in PR1992.317 in 1992. In 2002, Don Copithorne, former Minister of Transportation for Government of Alberta, donated the film comprising PR2002.0642.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: Fonds consists of two scrapbooks with letters, clippings and photographs related to Pollard's family and travels, tour brochures and lists of photographs taken on foreign journeys, an essay on the Cardston Temple and magazines with Pollard's photographs. Fonds also consists of a photographic supply catalogue, a large number of photographs taken or collected by Pollard, cinefilms created by Pollard, two order books, lantern slides, correspondence, magazines and brochures.
RELATED RECORDS: For other films or photographs by Harry Pollard see the following accession numbers: PR1967.0010, PR1979.0024, PR1997.0730.
