| LEVEL OF DESCRIPTION: | Fonds | No.: | PR0151 | TITLE: | Naomi Radford fonds | CREATOR: | Naomi Radford | DATE RANGE: | 1889-1970, predominant 1901-1938 | EXTENT: | ca. 200 photographs. – 0.03 m of textual records | ADMINISTRATIVE | HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Naomi Radford was born Naomi Rebecca Watt on November 13, 1908 in Edmonton, Alberta. Her parents, Balmer and Peggy (nee Hogg) Watt, were pioneer journalists who published The Saturday News, The Mirror, The Alberta Homestead and the Edmonton Daily Capital between 1905 and 1912. Owing to a small market, the papers all experienced difficulty so Balmer became editor of the Journal (later to become the Edmonton Journal) from 1918 until 1948. During much of his career Naomi, or “Beckie” as she was known by her friends, worked as her father’s assistant, and developed an interest in Alberta history. Naomi married Daniel Raymond Radford in 1934 and together they had two sons, Nicholas and Thomas. During the Second World War Naomi lived in London, England working as an antique buyer and contributing articles to the Edmonton Journal on her wartime experiences. She remained in London until her home was destroyed in a blitz, after which she returned to Edmonton in 1940 and managed the scrap metal depot for the Canadian Armed Forces. After the war Naomi continued her interest in journalism by helping her parents to write their memoirs. By the 1960’s she was writing Alberta School Broadcasts and began working as a contractor with the Oral History Project at the Provincial Archives of Alberta. Naomi’s youngest son Tom took up his mother’s interest in history and became a documentary filmmaker specializing in western themes. Her son Nick became an international banker, and President of Ice Hockey in Harlem, a New York educational charity. During the 1970s the Historical Society of Alberta recognized the three generations of the family for their contributions to Alberta history. Naomi Radford died in Edmonton, Alberta on March 15, 2002. | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | Fonds consists of the personal papers of Naomi Radford and her parents, as well as other items that Radford found to be of interest and considered worthy of long-term preservation. | RELATED RECORDS: | For other records relating to the Watt family see accession PR1997.243 of the Frederick B.
