HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Karen Leibovici was born on May 27, 1952. She has taken an active part in both Edmonton and provincial politics in Alberta since she became a resident of West Edmonton in 1980. She received both a Bachelor and Masters of Social Work from McGill University in Montreal. She also completed a Diploma in Management from the same institution. She has worked as an Industrial Relations Consultant for the Union of Professional Social Workers in Quebec, a Labour Relations Officer, and in the equal Opportunity Office for the City of Edmonton. Karen Leibovici was first elected to the Legislature as a member of the Liberal party in 1993 and has served as the Official Opposition Critic for Labour (1993-1997), Federal and Intergovernmental Affairs (1997-1998), Consumer and Corporate Affairs (1997-1998), Public Works, Supply and Services (1997-1998), and Health and Wellness (1998-2001). Karen Leibovici also served as the Liberal Caucus Deputy Whip (1996-1997) and Whip (1997). Karen did not win re-election in the Alberta provincial election of 2001. She served as Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Edmonton-Meadowlark constituency.Karen Leibovici also played an active role in her local community. As well as being one of the founding members of the West End Transportation Advisory Committee, she served as a member of the Youth Emergency Shelter Society, the Social Planning Council Board and the Chrysalis Business Advisory Council. She has served as Chair of the Edmonton Taxi Cab Commission, Block Parent Coordinator and volunteer for the Aldergrove Community League.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of records created and received by Karen Leibovici in carrying out her duties as the elected representative for the constituency of Edmonton Meadowlark. It also includes the records that reflect the functional role she played as a member of the Liberal Party Caucus. Fonds includes two series: Edmonton Meadowlark Constituency subject files, campaign files and office files; and Liberal Caucus files, Deputy Whip files, Official Opposition Critic files.
