HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Reeves Historical Society of America was a non-profit International Organization devoted to collecting all existing information on engines still in existence, such as catalogues, literature, patents etc., in an effort to catalogue this information for later publication. The Society was formed in Toronto, Ontario in April 1965 by Syd Matthews in response to the lack of information that existed on Reeves Steam Traction Engines and the Reeves Company that made them. The Society began with 18 charter members and its main objective was to preserve existing Reeves Steam Traction Engines, no matter what state of repair or condition they were in when discovered. Matthews established the Society hoping to locate and register, at one address, all Reeves Steam Traction Engines in existence and to find and make available to members all possible data about these engines, including blueprints, photographs, spare parts and measurements. This information would enable members to restore or reproduce an engine and assist model-makers in building accurate scale models of Reeves engines. The Reeves Historical Society of America further endeavoured to assist Owners, or Estate Executors, in finding buyers for Reeves Steam Traction Engines in order to prevent those engines from being “scrapped.” The Society made an effort to record or cause to be willed to some authorized foundation, such as the Ford Foundation or Smithsonian Institute, all information and actual engines as are not otherwise saleable.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:Syd Matthews, the founder and secretary-treasurer of the Reeves Historical Society of America, deposited these records with the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1967.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: Fonds consists of blueprints, reproductions of catalogues, lists for Reeves Steam Traction Engines, made specifically for the Society, correspondence, published State Boiler Laws and other relevant literature, news clippings, photographs and negatives, Reeves Historical Society of America membership lists, membership cards, letterhead, promotional materials and newsletters, a Reeves Steam Traction Engine Ledger, Reeves and Company history, patents, engine blueprint-reproductions, and other Steam-Club membership rosters.
DATE NOTE: Materials that were reproduced for the Society in 1964 and 1967 were originally created between 1911-1936. A number of photographs in the collection are not originals; they are copies made from copy negatives. Where possible, the original date of the photograph has been noted along with the date of the reproduced photograph.
