HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: In 1903, George Frances Downes received certification as a notary public in the North West Territories. George Frances Downes practiced law in partnership with Nelson D. Mills, known as Mills & Downes. Downes later partnered with John J. Drew. Downes was also involved in other partnerships including Downes & Marks and Downes & Hill-Male.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: Series includes diplomas, commissions, certificates, and client case files from Downes legal practice. Series includes files from Mills & Downes, Drew & Downes, Downes & Marks, and Downes & Hill-Male. Client files pertain to local families and businesses and include affidavits, indentures, appeals, writs, estates, wills, briefs, and land sales. Series also includes a page from the Edmonton Telephone Guide listing phone numbers of various Alberta Government law offices and agencies.
ARRANGEMENT NOTE: PR76.219 amalgamated accessions PR71.364, PR72.173 and 72.345. At this time, the files were rearranged into sub-series. Client files were arranged alphabetically. Subsequent accessions maintained this series and sub-series arrangement, as there is no information as to original order.
