His father, Pierre Valmore Gauvreau, was the first Dominion Land agent in Edmonton. His grandfather, P.G. Laurie, was actively involved in the Riel Rebellions and was the founder of the Saskatchewan Herald. Pierre Gauvreau was a well-known Edmonton citizen and a noted sports figure who played hockey for the Edmonton Eskimos in 1909 and 1910. He worked for some time as a telegraph operator for the Canadian Pacific Railway in Castor, Alberta. In 1911 he married his wife Mae and together they set out for Peace River country, travelling on foot, by riverboat and in a wagon. In Peace River Gauvreau became the first telegraph operator in the north. Years later in 1928, Gauvreau opened an insurance office in Peace River. This office remained open until 1961 when Gauvreau retired to his homestead. Gauvreau was interested in local, provincial and federal political affairs. He was a supporter of Social Credit and often exchanged letters with men like William Aberhart and Ernest Manning.
