HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | James Stewart Spencer was born at Carleton House in 1854, the son of William Spencer, a clerk with the Hudson’s Bay Company. Spencer worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company at Fort Chipewyan, Fort Vermilion, Fort McMurray, Edmonton and Lac La Biche from 1872 until his retirement in 1911. In 1887 he married Lily Elmore of Quesnel, British Columbia and together they had five children. Upon retirement, the Spencers made their home in Lac La Biche, where both James and Lily Spencer became very active in the community. James Spencer died in 1936. |
CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | The first accession of records was deposited at the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1966 by Mr. G.D. Guyon. The second accession was deposited in 1973 by Jim Hamar via Mrs. E. Rowand. The final accession of records was copied by the archives in 1977 and the originals returned to Mary Caroline Deschambeau, the daughter of James and Lily Spencer. |
SCOPE AND CONTENT: | Fonds consists of records from 1872 until 1942 that pertain to the Spencer family and to J.S. Spencer’s career with the Hudson’s Bay Company, including correspondence, financial records and photographs. While the majority of the records in this fonds have been copied and the originals returned to the donor, there are some original records present.
