HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Charles D. Denney was born January 25, 1901 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to George and Margaret Denney. In 1913 the Denney family moved from Dubuc, Saskatchewan to a farm near Edmonton, Alberta. Four years later they moved to a farm in Consort, Alberta. In 1923, Charles Denney attended Camrose Normal School and received his teacher training. He later attended the University of Alberta summer sessions for several years. Denney taught at a number of schools throughout Alberta including schools in Waskatenau, Edson, Tofield, Cereal and New Dayton. After years of teaching, Denney changed careers and became the Supervisor of Co-operatives and Credit Unions for the Province of Alberta in 1940. In 1943 he became an assessor with the Federal Income Tax Office until he started his own Income Tax and Accounting Office in 1951. Charles Denney was active in a number of organisations. He held executive positions with the Historical Society of Alberta and was very active with the McDougall United Church. He organised the Association of Summer Villages of Alberta and the Alberta Genealogical Society. Denney also served on the Edmonton Historical Board and was the historian for the Northern Alberta Pioneers and Old Timers’ Association. In 1976 he received the Amisk Waskahegan Chapter’s Award of Commendation. He was honoured by the City of Edmonton and the Historical Board for outstanding services in preserving our heritage in 1979. In 1990 he was honoured by the Historical Society of Alberta for his contribution to preserving Alberta and Canadian history. Denney was also a member of the Alberta Land Assessors Association, served on the Board of Rundle’s Mission and was on the Board of the Bissell Centre. Charles Denney and his first wife Mildred had one daughter, June. In August 1973, Mildred died. A year later, in November of 1974, Charles married his second wife, Elsie Colby.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: Fonds consists of records relating to Denney’s personal life and his family, as well as records reflecting his many interests. Fonds has been divided into two series: Personal papers and Historical interests.
