| HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | John Adam Sollanych was born in the Ukraine around 1890. He came to Canada in 1908 and homesteaded near Athabasca, Alberta. He later tried his hand at coal mining in Frank, Alberta. A short time later he moved to Edmonton and established the Alberta Printing Company. Sollanych owned and operated the company from about 1909 until 1955, when he sold the plant and retired. During its operation the plant printed most of the Ukrainian newspapers, magazines and books printed in Western Canada. Among the papers published by the plant was Our World. John Sollanych was a member of the Ukrainian Old Timer’s Association and a member of the Typographer’s Union. He died in Edmonton on March 2, 1967. |
| CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | Marion Schmidt, the daughter of John Sollanych, deposited these records with the Provincial Archives of Alberta in two accessions during 1967. |
