HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Jessie Daryl (nee Latta) Sturrock was born on April 14, 1899 in Edmonton, Alberta to David and Jessie Latta. Shortly after her birth Daryl, as she was commonly known, lost her mother. A year later her father remarried. In the late 1930s, Daryl married Edward Nielson Sturrock. They were together until his death on December 30, 1959. After the death of her husband, Daryl Sturrock became involved in the creation of a centre and society for all native aboriginal people. This society was called the Canadian Native Society of Edmonton and held its first meeting on November 13, 1960. On October 15, 1962 the name of this society was changed to the Canadian Native Friendship Centre and was incorporated under the Societies Act. In addition to her involvement with the centre, Daryl Sturrock was also involved in other social organisations including the First National Native Women’s Council and the Edmonton Citizenship Council. She was outspoken on issues of discrimination and corresponded with the editors of numerous newspapers. She was also interested in tracing the genealogy of her family and travelled several times to Ireland in search of her family background. Daryl Sturrock died on February 13, 1980.
