Between 1939 and 1951 Robert Torrance graduated from Victoria High School, attended the University of Alberta and undertook a number of wartime duties before embarking on a career with the Young Men’s Christian Association. While in University Robert was a second lieutenant in the Canadian Officers’ Training Corps and was a member of the Tuxis Older Boys’ Parliament where he served as Premier in 1940 and Speaker in 1941. From 1943 until 1944 Robert worked as a Special Services Director for Aircraft Repair Ltd., a firm engaged in contract repair work for the Commonwealth Air Training Program. He then worked for the Civilian Personnel Section of the United States Army Air Force’s Alaskan Division in Air Transport Command from 1944 to 1945. During this time he was also associated with a manufacturing and distributing firm in Edmonton called Industrial Cooperative Association Ltd. In 1945, Robert Torrance took up duties as a secretary in the Young Men’s Christian Association. Robert’s brother Kenneth J. Torrance was also involved with the Young Men’s Christian Association from 1941 until 1948. | | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | Fonds consists of records pertaining to Robert and Kenneth Torrance’s activities in various organizations and records reflecting their interests including correspondence, journals, resolutions, handbooks, newsletters, annual reports, programs, photographs, newspaper clippings and a map. The fonds has been divided into two series: Robert Torrance records; and Kenneth Torrance records.
