HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | John Alexander McDougall was born May 20, 1854 in Oakwood, Ontario, the only son of Alexander and Janet McDougall. John began moving west in the 1870s and settled in Edmonton, Alberta in 1877. The following year he returned to Ontario to marry Lovisa Jane Amey of Cannington. Together they travelled west and settled in Fort Edmonton. From 1897 until 1908 John McDougall served as the mayor of Edmonton. In 1909 he won a seat as a Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Edmonton area. He also began the firm of McDougall and Secord in partnership with Richard Secord. John McDougall died in Edmonton in 1928 at the age of 74. Lovisa McDougall died in 1943.John and Lovisa McDougall’s youngest son, Edmund Howard McDougall was born in 1890. Edmund McDougall married Vena Loretta Vickers on April 16, 1919. Both Edmund and Vena McDougall were active in the Edmonton community. Like his father, Edmund had a fondness for collecting fine furnishings and continued collecting antiques for the family home after his father’s death. Vena McDougall died September 5, 1975 and Edmund died in 1988. |
SCOPE AND CONTENT: | Fonds consists of records pertaining to various members of the McDougall family including Lovissa McDougall, John A. McDougall and E.H. McDougall. Records include cinefilms created by E.H. McDougall, correspondence, a photograph and an Edmonton directory. |
