| HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America was established in the United States in 1881. It began with a membership of about 2,000 people and gradually spread throughout the United States of America and Canada. On November 11, 1902, Local 1325 of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America was established in Edmonton, Alberta. The object of the union was to organize all those persons working in the field of carpentry and other related professions in order to encourage a higher standard of skill, to reduce hours of labour, to secure adequate pay for work done and to assist members in procuring employment. |
| CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | The majority of the records in this fonds were transferred to the Provincial Archives of Alberta from the Glenbow Alberta Institute in Calgary, in 1967 and 1969. Paul Nozack, former President of Local 1325 deposited more records with the Provincial Archives in 1973 and 1974. Two other accessions of records were received in 1973 and 1974 from Al Heidebrecht and Duncan Langley respectively. Both men deposited these records on behalf of Local 1325. |
| SCOPE AND CONTENT: | Fonds consists of the records of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, Local 1325 including minutes, financial records, correspondence, membership records, publications and photographs. The fonds has been arranged into the following series: Financial records; Affiliated organizations; Minutes; Correspondence; Conventions; Labour legislation; Publications; Membership records; Labour agreements; Miscellaneous records. Some series have been further divided into sub-series. |
