HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Imperial Order, Daughters of the Empire was founded in Montreal, Quebec on February 13, 1900 in response to increased fervor of British imperial loyalty following the Boer War. Originally named the Daughters of the Empire Federation, it was incorporated as the Imperial Order, Daughters of the Empire (I.O.D.E.) in 1901. The I.O.D.E. is a women’s organization with chapters in every province of Canada. In addition to Canada, chapters were established all over the world including Bermuda, the Bahamas and the United States. The I.O.D.E. is a non-sectarian non-partisan Canadian women’s organization. The National Chapter initiates and directs general policy. The patron of the organization is Queen Elizabeth II. The organization has three key areas of work: citizenship, education and services. The I.O.D.E. contributes to citizenship by organizing receptions, financing support to the ethnic press, promoting social integration, and promoting safety and health. The education component is fulfilled through bursaries, volunteering in libraries, or participating in special education, travel and exchange programs. The services area is fulfilled through charitable donations of clothing and bedding to those in need locally and abroad, especially during times of emergency or disaster. In addition, the I.O.D.E. publishes a national magazine entitled Echoes, which outlines the varied activities of the Order and articles of general interest. In Alberta, the I.O.D.E. is organized into primary chapters and junior chapters, municipal chapters and a provincial chapter. There are two municipal chapters in Alberta, one located in Edmonton and the other in Calgary. Edmonton is also home to the Provincial Chapter. The fonds has been arranged into three series: the Provincial Chapter minutes and other material, the Municipal Chapter of Edmonton minutes and other material; and Primary and Junior Chapter minutes and other material.
