Junior Branch of the U.F.A. | | DATE RANGE: | 1930-1942 | | EXTENT: | 0.04 m of textual records | | ADMINISTRATIVE | | HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | The Junior Branch of the United Farmers of Alberta (UFA) was launched in 1919. The Junior UFA became the Junior Farmers’ Union of Alberta (FUA) in 1949.
It did not take long for UFA members to recognize that the survival of their organization would depend on the young people, who would bring to their organization new ideas and their youth. Future farm leaders needed to be trained while still young. The majority of UFA and United Farm Women of Alberta (UWFA) members wanted to provide their young with the advantages of intellectual stimulation and citizenship training. The Junior UFA had two main goals: to provide a civil training ground for eventual adult participation in the farmer’s organization, and to continue the indoctrination of the young into the agrarian principles so important to the leaders of the UFA and UFWA. This was to be accomplished through a four-fold program of development which included educational, vocational, economic and social development.
The Junior UFA held annual conventions each year during University Farm Young People’s Week, which was sponsored by the UFA, the Alberta Government’s Department of Agriculture and the University of Alberta’s Department of Extension.
At the same time the UFA constitution had been revised to include women, it was revised to include sons of UFA members, to be included on a “family ticket.” When UFWA was formed, this women’s organization established a convenorship for Youth Work. Little was done until 1919 when Susan Gunn assumed responsibility of the convenorship, and twenty junior locals were established.
In 1949, the United Farmers of Alberta amalgamated with the Alberta Farmers’ Union; the new organization was known as the Farmers’ Union of Alberta. The women’s organization became the Farm Women’s Union of Alberta. Also at this time, the Junior UFA became the Junior FUA.
The work of Juniors was supervised by Youth Convenor of UFWA until 1926, after which it was supervised by the Education Committee of the UFA. Beginning in 1928, one delegate with full powers from each Junior local was invited to the Annual UFA Convention. By 1929, the Junior president had been given a place on the Board of Directors of the UFA.
