Also includes ca. 700 photographs, ca. 450 negatives, ca. 100 transparencies and 3 video cassettes. | | ADMINISTRATIVE | | HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Celebration of Women in the Arts was a non-profit organization formed by a group of women artists. The organization was dedicated to the advancement of Alberta’s women artists working in film, video, dance, music, visual arts, theatre, literature and interdisciplinary activities. Since its foundation in 1983 to its dissolution in 2000, the society actively promoted art created by women through sponsoring and producing projects in all artistic disciplines. These activities included musical and dramatic entertainments, art exhibitions, dances, concerts, film and video festivals, literary readings and other events related to the advancement of art. In 1983, Celebration of Women in the Arts also organized in 1983 the Women in the Arts conference in Edmonton. Another goal of the organization was to promote public awareness of women working in the arts. At a special meeting of the board, it was voted that after dissolution, that the organization’s money would be donated to the Edmonton Artists’ Trust Fund where the money would be distributed in the form of scholarships to women artists in the name of Celebration of Women in the Arts. | | CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | Just before its dissolution in 2000, Celebration of Women in the Arts contacted the Alberta Women’s Archives Association just before its dissolution in 2000 and its last executive explained explained that the members wished to leave a legacy and make, in future years, other women aware of projects handled by the organization. The Alberta Women’s Archives Association suggested that Celebration of Women in the Arts to contact the Provincial Archives of Alberta for a donation to donate of their archival records. | | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds consists of the records created by Celebration of Women in the Arts during the course of conducting its activities. The fonds is organized in the following two series: operational files with bylaws, minutes, correspondence, financial records, membership information and publications created or received by the society; and project files which present information on activities of interest to the society. | | RELATED SERIES: | PR0388.0001 (Operational files)
