HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Joseph Ladouceur came to Lac La Biche, North-Western Territories, in 1804 from Quebec. He married Josephte Cardinal, daughter of Joseph Soldat Cardinal and Louise Frobisher, in 1813. He had a son, Joseph. In 1843, Joseph (b. 1813) married Julie Auger. Five of their sons survived: Joseph, Augustin, Narcisse, David, and Adam (1843-1910). Adam's brothers worked as fur traders in the Lac La Biche area while Adam farmed. The family maintained a trading post at River Lot 3, and later at River Lot 45 near Notre Dame des Victories. Adam married Margeurite Desmarais (1847-1902) in 1872 and died in 1910 in Lac La Biche. Adam's father, Joseph, died in 1890. A fire destroyed the trading post in 1970.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:Mrs. Evelyn Rowand deposited accession PR1972.0088 in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1972. The records were found in the abandoned Ladouceur Trading Post ca. 1958. Mr. Marshall Hamar deposited accession PR1973.0090 in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1973. Mr. Hamar's relationship with Joseph Ladouceur is unknown. In 1993, Peter Ladouceur allowed the Provincial Archives of Alberta to copy the photograph of Adam Ladouceur. Peter is the grand-nephew of Adèle Ladouceur, Adam Ladouceur's daughter. In 1993, Millie Lansing, a great-great-grandchild of Joseph Ladouceur, allowed the Provincial Archives of Alberta to copy photographs of the Ladouceur family.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: Fonds consists of correspondence, receipts, envelopes, a homestead Certificate of Recommendation and photocopied records dating 1881-1922 which include, receipts, correspondence, envelopes, financial records, notes, and a permit. Fonds also includes a certificate appointing Louis Lessard as Justice of the Peace in Lac La Biche, Alberta, and various lists written in Cree. Fifty photographs featuring the Ladouceur family circa 1890 - 1900 are included.
LANGUAGE NOTE: Most of the material is in English, some written in Cree, some in French.
