Chapter 31, 1906). This legislation gave the administrating power to the municipalities. In 1908 legislation gave the Government of Alberta this power in An Act Respecting Government Telephone and Telegraph Systems (S.A. Chapter 14, 1908). The Telephone Branch of the Department of Public Works first issued a report in 1908. The Telephone Branch ceased operation in 1912 and the function emerged in a new Department of Railways and Telephones (S.A. Chapter 10, 1911-12). In 1955 the Department of Railways and Telephones became the Department of Telephones (S.A. Chapter 38, 1955). In 1958 The Alberta Government Telephone Act created a corporate entity to administer the function of a government owned communication system. The Bow Slope Mutual Telephone Company was incorporated on October 25, 1961 and served an area Scandia, Alberta. Specifically, it included Townships 14, 15, 16, and 17, Ranges 15, 16, and 17, West of the 4th Meridian (14,15,16,17-14,15,16-W4). The company was taken over by Alberta Government Telephones on January 8, 1974. | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | Fonds consists of the business records of the Bow Slope Mutual Telephone Company and includes certificate of incorporation, agreements, minutes, reports, correspondence, financial records, telephone statistics, subscriber lists, plans, advertising publications, examples of corporate and company stamps, and maps. | DATE NOTE: | Some subscriber accounts, financial records, and correspondence of the Bow Slope Mutual Telephone Company dated after the closing of the company are included in this fonds. | RELATED RECORDS: | Records of various other telephone companies are also located at the Provincial Archives of Alberta. | GENERAL NOTE: | The region serviced by the mutual telephone company is represented according to the Alberta Township Survey (ATS) system. |
