HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Hillcrest Coal and Coke Company Limited was formed by Charles Plummer Hill of Port Hill, Idaho in 1905 in the area that became known as Hillcrest in the Crows Nest Pass region of Alberta. Specifically, it was located at Section 21, Township 7, Range 3, West of the 5th Meridian (21-7-33-W5). In 1939 Hillcrest Coal and Coke Company merged with Mohawk Bituminous Mines Limited of Bellevue, Alberta, which had been formed originally as Maple Leaf Coal Company, and the new company was called Hillcrest-Mohawk Collieries Limited. The company operated until 1952 when it, along with International Coal and Coke Company Limited and McGillivray Creek Coal and Coke Company Limited, merged to form Coleman Collieries Limited. Coleman Collieries was closed in 1983.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:Mr. Theo Serra deposited accession PR1972.0352 in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1972 on behalf of Mr. A. Wakaluk. Mr. Serra’s relationship with Mr. Wakaluk is unknown, and Mr. Wakaluk’s relationship with Hillcrest-Mohawk Collieries is unknown as well. Garry D. Shutlak, Map/Architecture Archivist for the Public Archives of Nova Scotia, deposited accession PR1992.0311 in the Archives in 1992. Mr. D. J. MacNeil deposited the maps in the Public Archives of Nova Scotia in 1989.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: Fonds consists of the business records of Hillcrest-Mohawk Collieries Limited and includes accident/injury reports, bills of lading, coal operators’ monthly statements, correspondence, cost sheets, customer accounts, employee registers and accounts, employment applications, equipment catalogues/advertising flyers, equipment inventories, financial records, invoices, leases, memorandum, mine inspection reports, payroll records, permits, purchasing receipts, receipts, rental accounts, sales contracts, sample analysis reports, shift and wage cards, shipping manifests, telegrams, tenders, time sheets, wage agreements, war savings certificates deduction sheets, and maps depicting a portion of the mining properties of the Hillcrest-Mohawk Collieries and a horizontal projection of Mohawk Bituminous Mines. The fonds has been arranged into the following series: Mine Operations; Employees and Employee Relations; Payroll and Accounting; Correspondence; Hillcrest-Mohawk Realties; and Southern Trucking Company.
