ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Edmonton Home Economics Association (EHEA) was formed in March 1923 by a group of women seeking to organize a professional group for Home Economists. The aim of the EHEA was to cultivate a friendly spirit throughout all branches of Home Economics and more specifically to study curricula and extension instruction so as to establish professional standards for teachers and other workers, to encourage research, to increase knowledge through publications and meetings, and to advance public opinion and legislative enactment. The EHEA’s first constitution was adopted in 1927. The EHEA was affiliated with the American Home Economics Association from 1930 to 1954, and adopted the same objective as this organization: to improve the conditions of living in the home, the institutional household and the community. The EHEA’s affiliation with the American Home Economics Association declined following the formation of the Alberta Home Economics Association and the Canadian Home Economics Association, in 1935 and in 1939 respectively. The EHEA’s objectives were revised along the lines of the Canadian Home Economics Association, and later the Alberta Home Economics Association. In 1971, the EHEA changed its name to the Edmonton Area Home Economics Association, to be able to include members outside of Edmonton in the local organization. The name was again changed in 1985 to the Alberta Home Economics Association - Edmonton Area Branch. The objectives included to promote high professional standards through continuing education and professional development in home economics, to encourage research and the dissemination and use of research findings, and to facilitate communication and cooperation with local, provincial, national and international home economics groups.
