The fonds includes also: 1 photograph. – 1 painting. – 1 collage | ADMINISTRATIVE | HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | Bérangère Mercier was born on March 5, 1898 in Sainte-Julie de Laurierville, Québec, the oldest child of Arthur Mercier and his wife. She arrived with her family to Duvernay, Alberta in 1909, and moved to Edmonton, Alberta in 1913. Bérangère was a painter of landscapes and portraits in oil, trained by Edmonton artist William Johnstone, but for the most part considered herself self-taught. She was a charter member of the Edmonton Art Club in 1921; she was the club's president in 1950, 1951 and 1961. Bérangère was also soprano, and an Associate of the Toronto Conservatory of Music, having received her degree in 1935. She sang on the opening broadcast of CKUA in 1928 and also had her own program on the station from 1931 to 1933.
Bérangère Mercier was a charter member of the Edmonton Civic Opera Society in 1935. She also supported francophone culture and was a member of the Les Bonnes Amies Club. She was a bilingual secretary at the Edmonton Postal Service from 1935 until 1954. Bérangère Mercier was one of thirty-five women included in a Photobiography prepared by the Section Régionale Jean-Patoine d'Edmonton of the Alberta section of the Fédération des femmes canadiennes-françaises. The Photobiography was a Special Programmes Project entitled 'Revalorisation du Rôle de la Femme Franco-Albertain' commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Fédération des femmes canadiennes-françaises. Bérangère Mercier died on August 7, 1981. | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds consists of invitations, correspondence, concert programs, information about the Edmonton Art Club including membership lists, constitutions and catalogues, a Constitution and bylaws of the Women’s Canadian Club of Edmonton, an Edmonton Civic Opera Society’s Tenth Year Anniversary souvenir book, newspaper clippings about the Edmonton Art Club and about Bérangère Mercier, and a photograph of the first airmail flight from Calgary to Lethbridge, in 1931.
