Jean Wallbridge and Mary Imrie opened a downtown office in 1950; in 1957 they moved their office into their newly constructed home, Six Acres, where they also lived as a lesbian couple. The majority of their architectural projects were domestic in nature: private residences, apartment buildings, additions, and renovations; these were typical projects for female architects at the time. Their architecture featured light and open concepts. Jean was principally responsible for design and Mary for working drawings and contract administration. In 1957 Wallbridge & Imrie won the Prairie Regional award from the Canadian Housing Design Council for one of their house designs. The firm closed in 1979. | CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | Norma Killeen, for the Mary Imrie Estate, deposited the records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1988. | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds consists of the records of Wallbridge & Imrie, Architects, and includes two series: project records, which include correspondence, agreements, plans, blueprints, drawings, specifications, tenders; and financial records, which include financial statements, correspondence and other finance-related records. | ARRANGEMENT NOTE: | As Jean Wallbridge and Mary Imrie, from 1957 until 1979, worked as architects out of their home, there is overlap between some of their business records and their personal records, in particular in the correspondence and financial records. | RELATED RECORDS: | Also see the Mary Imrie and Jean Wallbridge fonds and the Erna Dominey fonds at the Provincial Archives of Alberta. | GENERAL NOTE: | Information for the administrative history is from the records, from Edmonton: The Life of a City, which is available in the Provincial Archives of Alberta Reference Library, 971.2334 E24 1995 PAA, and from the Provincial Archives of Alberta Reference Library Mary Imrie Information File.
The records were deposited at the same time and in the same accession as the Mary Imrie and Jean Wallbridge fonds, the Laubental & Imrie Holdings Limited fonds and the John Imrie fonds.
