Nielson formed the Sunwapta Broadcasting Company following their acquisition of the CFTP radio station in Edmonton, Alberta; the Company was incorporated November 26, 1934 under the Companies Act. The Company received a broadcasting license and the call letters CFRN, R for Rice and N for Nielson. CFRN Radio began broadcasting on November 3, 1934. That year, CFRN Radio offered thirteen hours a day on the AM frequency. In 1944, CFRN Radio became a member station of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) Dominion Network. Rice became the sole owner of the Sunwapta Broadcasting Company in 1946, after purchasing Nielson's interest. In 1947, CFRN obtained a license to broadcast on the FM frequency; CFRN-FM first aired April 25, 1951 as a simulcast of CFRN-AM. In 1953, CFRN Radio became Northern Alberta's first twenty-four hour station. In 1954, the Sunwapta Broadcasting Company broadened its services to include television and established CFTN-TV. CFRN-FM started its own autonomous operation in 1964. The CFRN-FM received approval from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to change its call letters from CFRN to CKXM on November 30, 1978 and this change became effective January 1, 1979; this was again changed in 1987 to CJKE-FM.
After receiving approval from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) in 1988, Dr. Rice transferred ownership of his shares of Sunwapta Broadcasting Company to Electrohome Limited of Kitchener, Ontario; Sunwapta Broadcasting became a division of Electrohome, In October 1991, Electrohome announced the sale of the two radio stations, CFRN-AM and CJKE-FM, to Standard Broadcasting Corporation Limited of Toronto, Ontario. The CRTC approved the sale in 1992.
| SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds consists of broadcasts from the following CFRN programs: Alberta Traveller (1974), Sunday Morning Magazine (1979-1980), Summer in the City (1980), Sunday in the City (1980-1981), Alberta Report (1980-1982), and Jubilee (1980); Second World War broadcasts (including an interview with a leader of the Dutch resistance movement, updates on Allied POWs, VE and VJ Day celebrations, women in the workforce, and the death of Franklin Roosevelt) and other broadcasts on a variety of subjects which include music, opening ceremonies and sportscasts.
