He enlisted in the army in 1915 shortly after he turned eighteen; he served with the Overseas Alberta Battalion 192 and helped organized the Canadian Corps Cyclists. After the First World War he returned to Calgary, Alberta and in 1923 undertook publicity and bookings for the Grand Theatre. He later worked as press photographer for the Calgary Herald and in 1928 was the editor of the newspaper. In 1933, he joined the editorial staff of The Albertan. He was later the first Canadian commercial news broadcaster for CFCN. In 1939 he was asked by Premier William Aberhart to open a government information bureau in Edmonton, Alberta and was appointed Director of Publicity and was later Director of the Alberta Travel Bureau. During the Second World War, Dan served as the liaison officer between the Alberta Government and the American troops building the Alaska Highway. He retired in 1962. Dan married Florence Varley in 1937, and they had one son, Eric. Dan Campbell died September 26, 1969 in Edmonton. | CUSTODIAL HISTORY: | Mr. Bruce W. Hogle deposited these records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1976. Mr. Hogle's relationship with Dan Campbell is unknown. Mrs. Daniel Campbell donated photographs to the Archives in 1981. | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds consists of photographs and negatives that depict various people, views, aerial views, buildings, and events in Alberta, as well as includes an index compiled by Dan Campbell. The fonds also includes photographs of Lieutenant-Governor John J. Bowlen, Premier William Aberhart, a scenic view around Banff, Alberta by Ernest Brown, and two of the Cascade River.
