(Mike) Finland was born on April 21, 1901 in Victoria, British Columbia. He attended Victoria High School and graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington in 1927. He began working fro consolidated Mining and Smelting Company (Cominco) at Kimberly, British Columbia, and when the company established a flying school at Creston, British Columbia, Finland trained to become a pilot, receiving his license in 1930. He married Olive Kells in 1933 and together they had two children. He worked in various locations for Cominco, including Goldfields, Saskatchewan, and was involved in the staking of the Cominco gold property near Yellowknife, Northwest Territories in 1935. In 1942 he became an instructor at Number (No.) 2 Air Observer School (AOS) in Edmonton, Alberta that was operated by Canadian Airways, and in 1943 was transferred to No. 8 OAS in Quebec. He served there until the end of World War II and in 1953 became manager of Alberta-Northwest Chamber of Mines, a position he held until his retirement in 1971. Finland was inducted into Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame in 1974 and in 1977 worked for McIntyre Mines as an intermediary between industry and the provincial government. He died on November 4, 1983. | | SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds consists of copied and original photographs that pertain to the career of G.H. (Mike) Finland as a pilot with Cominco and includes images of airplane, float planes, camps, aerial views of towns, airplane construction and repair equipment, accidents, boats, buildings and First Nations women. Fonds also includes images of G.H.
