ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Frank Oliver Junior (Jr.) was born in 1932 and son of John Oliver and grandson of Frank Oliver. He began working in the field of journalism in 1951. In the 1950s, the Edmonton Journal did not employ a staff photographer, but contracted photographic work to independent studios. In 1952, Laddie Ponich received a contract with the Edmonton Journal; Oliver apprenticed under Laddie Ponich. In 1953, Oliver established the Frank Oliver Studio at 11220 Jasper Avenue. The studio completed commercial work such as portraits, and weddings. He also maintained a contract with the Edmonton Journal from 1953 to 1955. Oliver left journalism in 1955.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of 5486 negatives Frank Oliver Jr. shot while working on contract for the Edmonton Journal dating from 1953 to 1955. The negatives include images of news items such as accidents, fires, robberies, cornerstone ceremonies, and construction; images of sport items such as boxing, wrestling, basketball, baseball, swimming, football, hockey, bowling, stock car racing, curling, tennis and badminton; and images of social events such as balls, banquets, luncheons, conventions, teas, retirements, anniversaries, winter carnivals, reunions, fashion shows, alumni gatherings, contest winners, presentations, groups and associations. The fonds also includes invoices, business cards, envelopes, desk calendars, and photo mats of the Frank Oliver Studio dating from 1953 to 1955 as well as some amateur photographic work by Frank Oliver dating from the 1950's.
