| LEVEL OF DESCRIPTION: | Fonds | No.: | PR2901 | TITLE: | Northern Alberta Health Libraries Association | CREATOR: | Northern Alberta Health Libraries Association | DATE RANGE: | 1981 - 2006 | EXTENT: | 0.30 m of textual records | ADMINISTRATIVE | HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | The Northern Alberta Health Libraries Association (NAHLA) was informally in existence since 1982, known as the Edmonton Health Libraries Association, and became an official chapter of the Canadian Health Libraries Association (CHLA)
in 1985 with a membership of thirty-four at that time. The mandate of NAHLA is to provide professional support, advocacy, and fellowship to the membership, foster quality health information services in Northern Alberta, and explore common interests and concerns among health libraries and librarians. NAHLA provides members opportunities for professional development and networking through conferences and workshops. NAHLA is governed by an elected executive comprising of a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and past-president who serve two year terms with the exception of the vice-president who automatically assumes position of president and subsequently past-president. Members comprise of professional librarians and librarian technicians working in health libraries such as the University of Alberta, The Alberta Association of Registered Nurses, teaching hospitals, and various related government libraries. In 1990, NAHLA formed the Hospital Library Group to address concerns unique to hospital libraries. Special projects of NAHLA include: publishing The Union List of Serials of the Northern Alberta Health Libraries Association, the Consumer Health Information, as well as a directory of sources for the Edmonton Area; planning the 1990 and 2003 CHLA/ABSC (Association des bibliotheques de la sante du Canada) conferences; and the recently formed NAHLA History Working Group.
| SCOPE AND CONTENT: | The fonds consists of materials illustrating the professional operations, activities, initiatives and membership of the Northern Alberta Health Libraries Association and includes association correspondence (letters, emails, newsletter submissions, 1985-2005; membership lists and applications, 1985-2005;
President's, Annual, and Treasurer reports, 1985-2005; executive meeting agendas and minutes, 1982-2005; association bylaws, 1988-2002; conference materials (correspondence, planning and agendas, surveys, speakers, etc.), 1990-2005; publications such as Consumer Health Information Directory and The Union List of Serials of the Northern Alberta Health Libraries Association; CHLA/ABSC Executive Manuals, 1995 & 1998; logo development and event advertising.
