ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: In 1957, four swimming clubs in Alberta formed the Amateur Synchronized Swimming Association of Canada, Alberta Section, to promote, teach, and improve synchronized swimming in the province. In 1969, the Association changed its name to the Canadian Amateur Synchronized Swimming Association. In 1970, the Alberta section incorporated, and became known as the Canadian Amateur Synchronized Swimming Association, Alberta Section. In the 1980s, the national association became known as Synchro Canada and the provincial body became Synchro Alberta. In January 2019, Synchro Alberta changed their name to Alberta Artistic Swimming (AAS) following the name change of Synchro Canada to Canada Artistic Swimming, which itself followed the 2017 international re-naming of the sport by the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) (English: International Federation of Swimming). AAS currently operates as a non-profit sport governing body for synchronized swimming in Alberta. Their current mandate is to “lead and develop people in the sport of artistic swimming in Alberta.” Alberta synchronized swimmers have been successful nationally and internationally and include Caroline Waldo and Michelle Cameron who won gold medals at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. AAS is one of 10 member provinces or territories affiliated with the parent organization, Canada Artistic Swimming. An 8-member board of directors consisting of a president, past president, coaches’ representative, competition chair, finance chair, judges’ chair, promotions chair, and swimmer development chair govern the association. The board is responsible for: Determining the strategic plan for the association taking into consideration the needs and wishes of the membership at large; Approving and monitoring the Alberta Artistic Swimming budget; Developing provincial policies; Evaluating the organizations program and performance results; Directing and overseeing the general activities of the association; and, Approval of association committee members, selection and appointment of certain committee chairs. AAS also relies on the assistance of volunteers who act as administrative members, officials, coaches and program coordinators. In pursuit of their objectives, the Association offers coaches and judges training, and develops provincial policies.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:In 2008, the Provincial Archives of Alberta received the material from the Glenbow Museum and Archives. The Glenbow had received the material from several representatives of Alberta Artistic Swimming between 1979 and 1991. In 2010, the Provincial Archives of Alberta received a further accrual of material directly from Alberta Artistic Swimming.
