HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: In 1944, the Radio Committee of the Association canadienne-française de l'Alberta (ACFA) started the fundraising for a completely French radio station in Alberta. Radio-Edmonton Ltd. was incorporated on September 25, 1947, with Bishop Ubald Langlois, Leon Omer Beauchemin, Louis Phillippe Mousseau and Alphonse Brosseau as initial directors. Under the auspices of ACFA and the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, its objective was to obtain the license for a radio frequency and to inaugurate and operate a French radio station at Edmonton. The license was granted on May 12, 1948 to establish a private commercial broadcasting station at Edmonton, Alberta, with a power of 5000 watts on the channel 680 KC. Paul-Émile Breton acted as secretary of Radio-Edmonton and Roman LeClair was hired as manager of the radio station. The first program of Radio CHFA (680AM) was broadcast November 20, 1949 from Garneau Theatre, Edmonton, after 15 years of arduous lobbying. CHFA continued to broadcast under the auspices of Radio-Edmonton Ltd. and ACFA until April 1, 1974, when the radio station was sold to CBC / Société Radio-Canada.
