HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Alice Trottier was born on March 22, 1922, in Morinville, Alberta, where she received her elementary and secondary education at the Notre-Dame Convent. In 1940 she joined the congregation Filles de Jésus (Daughters of Jesus). She entered the novitiate and attended teacher-training school at the motherhouse in Trois-Rivières, Quebec. Alice Trottier taught in several villages in Alberta between 1943 and 1968 while continuing her studies at the University of Alberta (B.Ed. 1954) and Université Laval (Quebec, M.A. 1958). From 1969 to 1987 she taught at the University of Alberta's Campus Saint-Jean and at the Newman Theological College in Edmonton. In 1974 she created the Salon d'histoire francoalbertaine with Kenneth Munro of the University of Alberta's History Department. Alice Trottier is the author or co-author of many books and papers on the history of Franco-Albertans. She received the Ordre des francophones d'Amerique in 1990 and the 125th anniversary of the Canadian confederation medal in 1992. In 1994 the Association canadienne-française de l'Alberta (ACFA) awarded her the Prix Eugène-C.-Trottier in recognition of her contribution to the promotion of the Franco-Albertan culture. The ACFA also made her a member of the Ordre des sages de la francophonie albertaine in 2004 for her contribution to the development and vitality of her community.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of interviews by Alice Trottier with Franco-Albertan pioneers, and with Julien LeBlanc, E.O. Druin, and Maurice Lavallée (ca. 12 hours of recordings), a photocopy of a map from 1888, eight photographs of Mgr. Legal, Filles de Jésus sisters and buildings; personal papers and administrative papers of the Salon d'histoire franco-albertaine.
