Over the course of Mae's life, she has been an advocate for people receiving institutional care - particularly the elderly and people with developmental or cognitive disabilities. Mae has been the secretary of the Family Advisory Council of the Good Samaritan Society. She is particularly interested in people with cognitive disabilities and how to ease the suffering of people with limited oral capabilities who experience chronic pain. Mae Deans has also worked and volunteered for several decades for the Alberta Women's Institutes where she is still very active as a volunteer. The functions of the Women's Institutes were to improve social conditions in rural and other communities by means of studying home economics and child welfare. The Institutes functioned to encourage agriculture and improve agricultural conditions. The Institutes also held, established and maintained demonstrations, lectures, short course schools, travelling and other libraries, exhibitions, competitions, meetings, conventions and attractions.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:The fonds was deposited at the Provincial Archives of Alberta by Mae Deans in 2009 when on behalf of the Alberta Women's Institutes, she collected records from past and present members to organize a travelling display for the 100th anniversary of these Institutes in Alberta.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of textual, digital and audiovisual material created or collected by Mae Deans during her volunteer years with the Alberta Women's Institutes. The drawings were created in color by children during a Farm Safety educational event organized in 1998-1999 by the Alberta Women's Institutes, which later donated this material to Mae Deans. The drawings show strategies developed by the Alberta Women's Institutes to improve quality of life in rural Alberta.
