HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:

Pierre Henri Alexandre Marie Féguenne was born in Belgium, September 3, 1882. He came to Canada in 1904 and worked in the printing industry in Red Deer, Trochu and at the University of Alberta prior to starting his own business, De Luxe Printing, in Edmonton in 1913. He then founded L'Union Printing Ltd. and published L'Union from 1917 to 1929, the only French newspaper in Edmonton at that time. He was also the owner of the Elgin Apartments in Edmonton. Pierre Féguenne was interested in engineering, holding four patents in Canada and the United States. He was also a member of the Legion of Frontiersmen and its official printer.

Pierre Féguenne married Marguerite Elizabeth Florentine Stocquis (died March 1973) in Edmonton, January 29, 1919. They were both from Verviers, Liege, Belgium, but they met and married in Canada. They had four children, all born in Edmonton: Claire Andree Pierrette (Sept. 17, 1920), Pierre Victor Edouard (Nov. 2, 1921), Marguerite Henriette Claira (June 17, 1923) and Andrée (Audrey) Augustine Victoire (Oct. 29, 1924-April 13, 1981). Pierre died October 22, 1974 in Edmonton.

CUSTODIAL HISTORY:The records were held by Claire Féguenne Kirkland and Audrey Martyn before Audrey Martyn deposited the records in the Provincial Archives.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of personal papers and correspondence of Pierre and Marguerite Féguenne, documents from Belgium regarding Féguenne, his business records and correspondence related to Union Printing, Elgin Apartments, his farm near Lac La Biche and his participation in a fox farm, the Memorandum and the Articles of Association of Union Printing, samples of printing, minute book and constitutive documents of Union Printing, some publications from Pierre Féguenne’s collection, a set of photographs of people, events and activities pertaining to the Legion of Frontiersmen, a history of the Legion, one photograph from 1908 of the staff and office of Red Deer Advocate, photographs of the staff of Trochu Tribune, Progrès Albertain, and Union Printing, and photographs of family and friends in Alberta and in Belgium.
