HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Knox Presbyterian Church was established in 1891 as the first Presbyterian church in South Edmonton. The church was located on the corner of 84 Avenue and 104 Street. In 1925, the congregation joined the United Church of Canada, a union of the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational denominations and the congregation was reconstituted as Knox United Church. In 1972, Knox United Church amalgamated with Metropolitan United Church and was renamed Knox-Metropolitan United Church, located in the former Metropolitan United Church building on 109 Street and 84 Avenue. It is part of the Edmonton Presbytery.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:Records deposited under accession number PR1975.0387 were acquired sometime prior to 1975 however there is no surviving record of the details. In 1975, the Conference entered into a permanent loan agreement with the Provincial Archives of Alberta (PAA) for the physical custody and control of the holdings of the Conference Archives and the records were relocated to the PAA in that same year. The Conference retained the church registers until 1983 at which time they were transferred to the PAA under Accession Number 1983.285. Other deposits after 1975 have come from Knox-Metropolitan United Church. The records currently reside at the PAA.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of annual reports (1972); Board of Managers records (1933-1971); congregational meetings records (1933-1970); Committee of Stewards records (1960-1972); Session records (1925-1970); church registers of baptisms, marriages and burials (1925-1961); membership records (1938-1961); communion roll and register (1925-[1972]); visitors books (1942-1965); financial records (1943-1972, with gaps); Long Range Planning Committee records (1970); Christian Education Committee records (1958-1971); Ladies' Aid records (1929-1945); Woman's Association records (1946-1962); Woman's Missionary Society records (1925-1961); Hi-C records (1959-1966); Young People's Union records (1951-1965); Sunday School records (1925-1929, 1950); Vacation Bible School records (1951-1966); orders of service (1979-1971); newsletters (1955-1956); photographs (1931-1967); and historical data ([1925]-1970.)
