ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The Professional Women in Travel in Northern Alberta (PWITNA) was formed in January 1981 as a non-profit volunteer association. Linda Vacheresse, a Mutual of Omaha Insurance Representative and former member of the Calgary based Southern Alberta Women in Travel (SAWT), organized a group of twelve to fifteen women from her business contacts for the purpose of creating a similar association in Northern Alberta. They met at the Edmonton Inn. The objective of the new association was to promote networking, education, professionalism, and social programs. Original committee members included Susan Ulrich (President), Sharon Elliot (Vice President), Cynthia Shortreed (Secretary), Carol Nelson (Treasurer, later replaced by Brenda Grobman), Kathleen Elliott (Membership), Lesley Thomas (Reception), Deana Owen and Carol Lee Marshall (Program and Fund Raising). Executive meetings were held at the Sun Life Building in Edmonton. The inaugural meeting of the association was held in March 1981. PWITNA joined the International Federation of Women’s Travel Organizations (IFWTO) on April 21, 1982 in Auckland, New Zealand.

From 1982 until 2007 the association organized travel opportunities in conjunction with IFWTO for its members and conducted charitable fundraising events and social activities. Both PWITNA and IFWTO dissolved in 2007 as a result of a decline of the tourism industry.
