HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | The Church of God Reformation Movement began in Beaver Dam, Indiana in 1881 and first appeared in Canada in Peepabaum, Ontario in 1888. The Church of God considers itself non-denominational and therefore has no formal membership structure or creeds outside teachings found in the Bible, though it has roots in the Methodist holiness tradition of Christianity.
The Church of God made its first Alberta appearance in 1905 when W.H. Smith, a street preacher from Denver, Colorado, began giving public sermons in Edmonton. The first permanent, Albertan Church of God congregation was established in Edmonton with a church on 96th Street and 114th Avenue.
The Camrose Church of God began in the 1920s out of the home of Sarah Monroe, who provided room and board for aspiring teachers studying at the Camrose Normal School. Monroe held Church of God services on Saturdays and Wednesday evenings. The Church of God congregation continued to meet at Monroe’s home until 1953, when construction was completed on a permanent church building. Gordon Schieck was the first pastor of the new Camrose Church of God building.
