HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Great North Communications was founded in 1987 by Tom Radford and Andy Thomson in order to produce a documentary on the Canada-China Dinosaur Project. The production company changed its name to Great North Productions in 1988 and Thomson served as its president until the company was bought by Alliance Atlantis Communications in 2000. During the course of its existence, Great North produced over 100 documentaries including The Canadians: Biographies of a Nation, The Last Roundup (on Albertan country musician Wilf Carter), and Distant Skies (on Albertan First World War flying ace Wop May).
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The series consists of administrative records created or collected by Great North Productions during the time that Tom Radford was involved with the production company. There are also scripts and production files for several film projects, including some that were never produced. There are also camera tapes shot in Fort Ticonderoga, New York, for an unspecified project that was never completed as well as a release copy of the documentary Life After Hockey.
