HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Cameron (Cam) Alexander Smith was born September 17, 1906 in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. In 1911, the family moved to Edmonton, Alberta. In the 1920s and 1930s, Cam played semi-professional baseball as well as professional hockey for the Edmonton Superiors and the Edmonton Eskimos. He was married November 18, 1939, and he and wife Freda had one son, Robert. Cam was an engineer, and for a brief time was employed on the railways. In the 1950s, he owned and operated Service Machine & Boiler Limited, retiring in 1978. Cam Smith died August 21, 1986.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of images of the Edmonton and Camrose hockey teams, Renfrew baseball park and a train engine.
RELATED RECORDS: Gary Zeman was working on a project about the history of hockey in Alberta and coordinated the copying of a number of hockey-related photographs by the Provincial Archives of Alberta. Mr. Zeman's book is entitled Alberta On Ice, and is available in the Provincial Archives of Alberta Reference Library, 796.962 Z4 1986.
GENERAL NOTE: Information for the biographical sketch is from the records. Three photographs can be located in the A file of the Provincial Archives of Alberta reference prints under the numbers A.12,905 to A.12,907, and A.14,890 to 14,894, the other photographs can be located in the Bl (Blyth) file of the Provincial Archives of Alberta reference prints under the numbers Bl.2720 to Bl.2722. Susan E. Smith also deposited artifacts in the Human History division of the Provincial Museum of Alberta, which were assigned accession number H.86.241.
