| LEVEL OF DESCRIPTION: | Fonds | No.: | PR1519 | TITLE: | Citizens' Cenotaph Committee of Edmonton fonds | CREATOR: | Citizens' Cenotaph Committee of Edmonton | DATE RANGE: | 1935-1940 | EXTENT: | 0.02 m of textual records | ADMINISTRATIVE | HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: | The Citizens' Cenotaph Committee of Edmonton was organized in 1935, comprised of representatives from thirty-two organizations, including the Municipal and Westward Ho! chapters of the Imperial Order of Daughters of the Empire (IODE), the Edmonton War Widows' Association, the Overseas Nursing Sisters' Association, the Women's Conservative Association and the Edmonton Red Chevron Club. The Committee met to coordinate the construction of a cenotaph in Edmonton, Alberta to commemorate approximately 3000 citizens of Edmonton who gave their lives in the First World War. A.E. Nightingale was chairman of the Committee. The Cenotaph, located at 102nd Street and 100th Avenue, was unveiled by Lord Tweedsmuir, Governor General of Canada, on August 13, 1936. The Cenotaph has since been moved to a new location in front of City Hall.
