HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: George Albert McKee was born August 7, 1871 in Whitechurch, Ontario; he was the son of Alexander and Maria (Burnham) McKee. He was educated in Peterborough and Uxbridge, Ontario. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Toronto in 1896. He married Margaret Hannah Doherty on December 24, 1896. George taught at Caledonia High School, Clinton Collegiate Institute (1892-1894), Ridgetown Collegiate Institute (1896-1897) and London Collegiate Institute (1897-1900). From 1900 until 1904, he worked in the office of the W. Doherty and Company Limited, and beginning in 1904, was the western manager of the firm, based in Calgary, North-West Territories. In 1908, he was the Calgary manager of Alberta Systems, Teachers’ Agency Department; his brother, Clayton, operated the company’s headquarters in Strathcona, Alberta. In 1908, George became the principal at the Strathcona Collegiate Institute (which was renamed the Strathcona High School in 1913); he held this post until 1920. After three years as an inspector of high schools, he became the superintendent of the Edmonton Public School Board in January 1924. He was a member of the Edmonton Public School Library Board for four years, and was a member of the local committee of the National Council of Education. He was also an active member of the United Church of Canada. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his service to education. George retired in 1940 and moved to Victoria, British Columbia. George A. McKee died December 1, 1953. McKee Elementary School in Edmonton was named in his honour.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:Diane Coulthard, Harold Fletcher McKee’s granddaughter, deposited the records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1989. Harold Fletcher McKee was George A. McKee’s brother.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of records of George A. McKee and includes his certification as a commissioner to administer oaths, statistics for Bible instruction in Edmonton schools, guidelines for Bible Readings in the Edmonton Public Schools, correspondence regarding teacher salaries, a brief on financing education prepared by G.A. McKee, and photographs of the Strathcona Collegiate Institute hockey teams.
