HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: James A. Bell was born ca. 1888 in Yorkshire, England. He graduated from Leeds University as a civil engineer and then moved to Canada in 1911. In 1913 he joined the Edmonton city engineering department. When the First World War broke out, Bell returned to England in 1916 as a member of the 63rd Battalion of the infantry. During the war he began his flying career after a friend suggested that he join the flying corps. At the end of the war he returned to Edmonton and in 1930 was appointed manager of the Edmonton Municipal Airport. He remained in this position until his retirement in 1962. In 1947 Captain James A. Bell, or Jimmy as he was commonly known, was honoured by the United States Air Force and awarded the Medal of Freedom. Bell was also active in the Edmonton and Northern Alberta Aero Club and was one of the first directors of the Edmonton Flying Club. At his death in June 1967 Bell was survived by his wife, Susan, and his son, Jock.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: Fonds consists of records pertaining to the Edmonton Municipal Airport including photographs, memoirs and notes written by Bell while he was manager of the airport.
