She grew up in Hilliard, Alberta, where her father ran a garage, a lumberyard and a hardware store. In 1937, Elizabeth received her First Class Teaching Certificate from the Edmonton Normal School; she taught for six years. In 1941, she met Harald Lefsrud, and they were married in 1943. Elizabeth helped organize the Rosegarland Women’s Institute in 1945 and served as its first president; she was active in the Women’s Institute for a number of years. Elizabeth and Harald had five children: Edmund John, Daniel Marshall, Gwendolyn Elizabeth, Anna Karen and Harold Christopher.
