HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Thomas McCallum, originally from Prince Edward Island, and Elizabeth McCoubrey, a schoolteacher from Wyoming, met and were married near Westlock, Alberta in 1911. They homesteaded near Thorhild, Alberta and later near Croyden, British Columbia. Tom worked at sawmills in Mirror Landing, Alberta, Carrot Creek, Alberta, Aleza Lake, British Columbia, Alpen, Alberta and Croydon, British Columbia. Tom and Elizabeth owned a sawmill at Ellscott, Alberta and later operated a mill on the Athabasca River, which they later purchased and called McCallum’s Mill; they also purchased a mill in the Northwest Territories, the Yellowknife Lumber Company. They settled in Quesnel, British Columbia. Tom died in 1961 and Elizabeth in 1963. They had one adopted son, Archie.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:Doris N. Haralson, on behalf of Archie McCallum, son of Thomas and Elizabeth McCallum, allowed the records to be copied by the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1982. Doris Neeley Haralson included the photographs in her publication Northland Echoes, about the McCallum’s experiences. The original records were returned to Doris N. Haralson.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of images dating 1910 to 1942 relating to the lives of Thomas and Elizabeth McCallum, including images from locations such as Thorhild, Athabasca, Waterways, and Embarras, Alberta, of the construction of the Jasper railroad, a log house, musicians, icehouse construction, scows, boats, sawmills, a post office, and seaplanes.
