HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Dates of Founding and/or Dissolution:
The Alberta Automobile Insurance Board was established in 1971.

Functional Responsibility:
The Alberta Automobile Insurance Board was established under An Act to Amend the Alberta Insurance Act, (S.A. Chapter 53, 1971) and continues to be constituted under section 653 of the Insurance Act (R.S.A. Chapter I-3, 2002). The Alberta Automobile Insurance Board primary function is to ensure the Alberta motoring public the availability of compulsory insurance at commercially competitive rates. The Board was empowered to investigate any Alberta automobile insurance matter including rates, benefits and availability of automobile insurance. The enabling legislation authorized the Alberta Automobile Insurance Board to review and approve the insurance premium rate programs for compulsory auto insurance coverage. Insurers are required to obtain prior approval from the Alberta Automobile Insurance Board for insurance rate changes and compulsory coverage insurance. The Alberta Automobile Insurance Board encourages traffic safety programs by supporting government initiatives.

Administrative Relationships:
The Lieutenant Governor in Council appoints the members of the Alberta Automobile Insurance Board. The Lieutenant Governor in Council may designate one of the members of the Board as chair and another as vice-chair. The Board reports to the Minister of Finance.
The first Alberta Automobile Insurance Board appointed by Order in Council 2122/71was under the jurisdiction of the Attorney General. Responsibility for administration of the Board transferred from the Attorney General's Department to the Department of Consumer Affairs in 1973, (O.C. 0887/73). On the Department of Consumer Affairs dispersal in 1992 the Automobile Insurance Board was transferred to the jurisdiction of Alberta Treasury. In 2001 the Board became responsible to the Minister of Finance.

Administrative Structure:
The Board consists of as many members as appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. The majority of members constitutes quorum of the Board for the purpose of exercising its powers and performing its duties.
