HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: In 1979, a group of Glenora (Edmonton, Alberta) residents gathered, at the instigation of Anne Binder, with the idea of creating a historical record of the area, in honour of new Glenora School’s fortieth anniversary. This group, who met regularly through the winter of 1979-1980, assembled to research the origins and history of the community. The group was divided into four parts: Early Years, Architecture of the Community, People of the Community and Glenora School. The overall aims of the Glenora History Project were to stimulate interest in the history of the school and community, to mount an exhibit which would be held at the school, to write an illustrated book of general interest and to gather documents and photographs for a permanent record of the school and community history to be kept in the school and made available as resource material to present and future teachers and students. Once the materials were gathered, Peg O’Connor Farnell, a longtime resident of Glenora, was chosen to write the book; Old Glenora was published by the Old Glenora Historical Society in 1984.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of records about the history of Old Glenora compiled for the project and used by Peg O’Connor Farnell, and includes transcripts of interviews, biographical information about residents, information on local businesses and houses, publications related to the area, copies of project minutes, an interview with Doug Matheson, some original photographs, and other photographs copied from the Provincial Archives of Alberta and Glenbow collections of houses, buildings and personalities, and photographs of the students of Llanarthney School for Girls in Edmonton.
PHYSICAL CONDITION: One of the audio cassettes is barely audible and has substantial microphone noise.
RELATED RECORDS: Old Glenora is available in the Provincial Archives of Alberta Reference Library, 971.233 F231.
