ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: In 1912, Achilles Schmid traveled down the Athabasca River, Alberta and visited tar sands.
CUSTODIAL HISTORY:In 1968, Achilles Schmid's children donated the material to the Provincial Archives of Alberta.
SCOPE AND CONTENT: The fonds consists of photographs taken during Achilles Schmid's travels down the Athabasca River in 1912. The photographs feature images of Athabasca Landing, limestone, First Nations, rapids, Athabasca Valley, a moose hunt, a portage, boat travel, an oil derrick, Pelican Rapids, tar sands, Fort McMurray, the Athabasca Oil Company, Hudson's Bay Company scows, dog teams, wintery landscapes, Calling Lake, a school house at Lac La Biche, the Northwest Mounted Police Station at Lac La Biche, and settlers of Lac La Biche. The fonds also includes photographs and negatives copied by the Provincial Archives of Alberta for the purpose of displaying the material in the Achilles Schmid fonds.
